Jim has over 25 years of investment and merchant banking experience and has completed over $35 billion of advisory and financing transactions. Jim founded The Mercanti Group in 2001 after leaving Credit Suisse First Boston/Donaldson, Lufkin and Jenrette (DLJ) where he was head of its Consumer Group specializing in branded products. Prior to joining DLJ, Jim was Head of Investment Banking at Dain Rauscher. Before joining Dain in 1997, Jim was a partner with William E. Simon/Aurora Capital, a leveraged buyout firm based in Los Angeles. He also held investment banking positions at Drexel Burnham Lambert and E.F. Hutton and was chief financial officer of a $14 billion investment and lending firm. Jim has worked with clients such as Cabela’s, Caribou Coffee, Chronimed, Eagle One, Elizabeth Arden, Empi, Graham Webb, Gucci, K2, Norwest Equity Partners, Pulmonetic Systems, Rural Cellular and Weston Presidio. Jim received a BBA from the University of Notre Dame.

Randy joined Mercanti in 2003 and currently oversees the firm’s Los Angeles office. Randy has more than 20 years of domestic and international investment banking experience and has completed more than $10 billion of M&A, financing and restructuring transactions.  He has experience in all areas of investment banking including domestic and cross-border M&A, restructurings and raising public and private debt and equity including IPOs, follow-on equity offerings, PIPEs, convertible debt, investment grade debt, high yield debt and bank debt. Prior to joining Mercanti, Randy worked at Credit Suisse First Boston, Donaldson, Lufkin & Jenrette (where he co-founded DLJ’s Consumer Products Group), BT Securities and Drexel Burnham Lambert both domestically and in Asia. He has worked with clients ranging from Fortune 100 companies to small private companies, including The Alaska Club, Clorox, Costco, Freeman Cosmetics, GameTech International, Graham Webb, Harveys Casino Resorts, Helen of Troy, Mattel, Rental Services Corporation, StarTek and Water Pik Technologies. Randy received a BA in Economics and Mathematics from Claremont McKenna College and an MBA in Finance and Entrepreneurial Management from The Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania. Randy also is a Vice Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Children’s Bureau of Southern California, a non-profit organization dedicated to the prevention of child abuse.

Tom has more than 25 years of investment banking and private equity experience and has completed over $50 billion of advisory, financing and restructuring transactions.  Tom joined Mercanti in 2009 and leads the firm’s restructuring practice.  Previously, Tom spent more than four years as a partner at two private equity funds, the Yucaipa Companies and Leonard Green & Partners LLP.  During his investment banking career, Tom served as the Co-Head of the West Coast Mergers & Acquisitions practice of DLJ/CSFB, Head of the Los Angeles Corporate Finance Group of Bear, Stearns & Co. and Global Co-Head of the Financial Sponsors Coverage Group of Bear, Stearns & Co.  He started his investment banking career at Drexel Burnham Lambert Incorporated where he was a managing director in the firm’s leveraged acquisition group.  In addition to acquisition and financing transactions, Tom has advised debtors, creditors (including labor unions) and potential third-party sponsors of reorganization plans or acted as a principal in a wide range of out-of-court and in-court restructurings, including Americold Logistics, UAL (the parent of United Airlines), Venture Holdings, Cyrk, Renaissance Cosmetics, Lone Star Cement, Circle K Corporation, Kaiser Aluminum, Elsinore Corporation, Tel-Am Corporation and World Airways. Tom received a BA from Colgate University, a JD from Seattle University, a LLM from New York University and a MBA from Columbia University.  Tom also is a member of the State Bar of California.

Brian joined Mercanti in May 2007 to further strengthen the firm’s investment banking team and increase its presence in the Health & Wellness, Gaming and Consumer Products sectors.  Prior to joining Mercanti, Brian worked at Seidler Capital where he advised middle market companies on a broad range of corporate finance transactions including buy-side and sell-side M&A, private and public capital raising, PIPE’s, debt recapitalizations and fairness opinions.  While Brian has advised a diverse group of companies across a wide variety of industries, his primary specialization is in Health & Wellness where he has worked with clients including ReNew Life Formulas, NutriSystem, 4Life Research, Champion Nutrition, Reliv International, AG Ferrari Foods and NDS Nutrition.  Prior to Seidler, Brian worked in Enron’s Global Finance division providing corporate development strategy and transaction structuring for Enron’s numerous broadband initiatives.  Brian received a BBA from the University of Notre Dame and an MBA from Georgetown University, where he graduated Beta Gamma Sigma.

Todd has over fifteen years of transaction experience. Todd has executed over 75 M&A, equity and leveraged finance transactions as an investment banker and investment professional across a broad range of industries, including industrials, chemicals, manufacturing, energy and renewable energy, consumer products, real estate, and technology.  Prior to joining Mercanti in 2009, Todd was a Senior Vice President in the Mergers & Acquisitions Group at Moelis & Company.  Todd also has served as Chief Investment Officer of M.A.G. Capital, LLC, a Los Angeles-based private investment firm focused on providing structured growth equity to small-cap public companies.  Prior to M.A.G. Capital, Todd worked at UBS Investment Bank and Donaldson, Lufkin & Jenrette.  Todd has also advised clients as a management consultant at McKinsey & Company and as a corporate attorney at Latham & Watkins.  Todd has worked with several renewable energy clients, including Rentech, Capstone Turbine, Pacific Ethanol, Global Clean Energy Holdings, and Allegro Biodiesel.  Todd graduated Order of the Coif from the University of Pennsylvania Law School and holds a BA in History from Carleton College.

Cynthia joined Mercanti in 2001 as General Counsel.  She serves not only as General Counsel but also as Corporate Secretary and Director of Business Operations.  Additionally, she oversees Mercanti’s broker-dealer arm, Mercanti Securities.  Cynthia is admitted to practice in the state courts of Minnesota and Wisconsin, the U.S. District Court for the District of Minnesota, the U.S. Court of Appeals, Seventh and Eighth Circuits, and before the U.S. Supreme Court.  Prior to joining Mercanti, she served for more than 25 years as the Commissioner (Chief Legal Officer) of the Minnesota Supreme Court, participating in the resolution of more than 30,000 cases or petitions presented to the Court, including overseeing the case flow, proposing disposition solutions to complex legal questions, assuring as prompt a resolution as possible, assigning the cases to an individual justice for authoring, and assisting the court as otherwise necessary. She also managed a considerable staff of career and temporary attorneys and other legal personnel; designed and implemented a series of procedures relating to the management of the Supreme Court and the establishment of the Minnesota Court of Appeals system; served as the Court’s liaison to the trial courts and attorneys practicing state-wide; and served for over 20 years on the Supreme Court Advisory Committee for the Rules of Civil Procedure, Rules of Civil Appellate Procedure and Rules of Criminal Procedure.

Dave joined The Mercanti Group in 2001 and has worked on a broad range of transactions and advisory assignments including buy-side and sell-side M&A, private and public capital raising, recapitalizations, restructurings, PIPE’s, debt placements and fairness opinions.  Dave has provided financial and strategic advice to publicly-traded corporations, sponsor-backed and independent private companies and family-owned and entrepreneur-led businesses within the consumer products, retail and restaurant, business services, distribution and logistics, healthcare and manufacturing industries.  Dave specializes in working with middle market companies in the health club and fitness equipment, outdoor lifestyle, sporting goods, personal care and lifestyle apparel sectors.  Some of Dave’s clients include Cabela’s, The Alaska Club, K2 Inc., Thymes and Gander Mountain. Prior to joining Mercanti, Dave worked at Piper Jaffray & Co. in the Consumer Investment Banking Group. Dave graduated magna cum laude from the University of Notre Dame where he received a BBA with a major in Finance and a minor in Accounting and he completed the Arts and Letters Honors Program.  Dave is also a CFA charterholder.

Eric brings over eight years of investment banking experience, having advised clients across a range of sell-side and buy-side M&A transactions, equity and debt private placements, and other strategic advisory engagements.  Since joining Mercanti in 2007, Eric’s efforts have been focused primarily on the Health & Wellness, Personal Care, Gaming and other consumer products sectors.  Eric’s recent transaction experience has included the recapitalization of ReNew Life Formulas by Swander Pace Capital and the sale of Champion Nutrition to Nature’s Products.  Prior to joining Mercanti, Eric was a Vice President in the corporate finance group of Seidler Capital where he advised on the sale of Summit Gaming to GameTech International; the recapitalization of Electra Bicycle Co. by Caltius Equity Partners; and the $25 million equity capital raise for Reliv International.  Before that, he was with the Mergers & Acquisitions group at CIBC World Markets.  He began his career as a corporate finance analyst at Prudential Volpe Technology Group.  Eric graduated cum laude from Harvard University with a BA in Economics.

Paul Marcus joined The Mercanti Group in 2006.  Paul focuses his efforts on transactions in active and leisure, health and wellness, specialty retail and consumer branded products and services sectors.  Before joining Mercanti, Paul worked in private equity with K1 Ventures Limited.  Based in K1’s Los Angeles office, Paul was responsible for evaluating acquisition opportunities, due diligence, analyzing deal structures and financial modeling as well as assisting in the management and valuation of K1’s investment portfolio.  Prior to K1, Paul worked for Eastdil Secured (previously Secured Capital Corp.) on their secondary commercial mortgage loan sales desk.  Prior to Eastdil Secured, Paul was with Merrill Lynch focused on asset management.  Paul received a BS from Boston University and an MBA in Finance from the University of Southern California’s Marshall School Of Business.
